Cell controller is usually used in semiconductor and electronic equipment using the SECS/GEM communication protocol. This provides a two-way communication between Cantier MES and individual or group of equipment and allows MES to perform strip map, wafer map, recipe management, validation, and other equipment automation activities.

In addition to Industry 4.0, the Cell Controller equipment automation capability enables decentralized decision making. SECS/GEM Drivers can also be configured to create custom SECS messages. The definitions of these messages from the SECS II and GEM standards are also supported.
